About
SOLAMAC
Latin American Society of Specialists in Aquatic Mammals, created on October 28, 1994, in Florianópolis, Brazil, and officially founded in 1996 in Viña del Mar, Chile.
01
History
Since 1984, the Latin American scientific community has met every two years at the Working Meetings of Aquatic Mammal Specialists of South America to discuss current knowledge of the region’s aquatic mammals.
As the network grew, it needed a society that would bring aquatic mammal researchers together and support the production and dissemination of this knowledge, the conservation of the species, and the recognition of their importance to ecosystems.
On October 28, 1994, during the 6th RT in Florianópolis, Brazil, a group of specialists founded the Latin American Society of Specialists in Aquatic Mammals, SOLAMAC. The official founding came in 1996, during the 7th RT in Viña del Mar, Chile.
